Metcalfe Park is a hyper-segregated neighborhood of concentrated poverty on Milwaukee’s North side where more than 46% of residents live below the federal poverty level. These factors have resulted in a lack of access for residents to exercise their voices to affect and advocate for social change, justice and bring essential resources to the community. It was incorporated as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation in 2017. The MPCB mission is to create a neighborhood where residents are safe, connected to each other, participate in community and civic life, have access to educational and economic opportunities, and celebrate diversity and culture.
Consistent with its mission, MPCB’s work is driven and directed by Metcalfe Park residents who share a vision and commitment to work for change. Residents articulated their goals and efforts in the 2019 Metcalfe Park Community-Led Investment Plan that is designed to connect residents to services and programs while building capacity in five focus areas: 1) safety and placemaking; 2) connectedness and cultural vibrance; 3) civic engagement; 4) international wealth and opportunity; and 5) health and wellness.
Today, MPCB is recognized as the leading resident voice and energy in Metcalfe Park and is respected citywide for its commitment to the community. MPCB and residents have built strong relationships with each other, neighborhood partners and stakeholders and government officials. There is increased collective efficacy in this neighborhood where residents hold each other and others responsible and create positive social change.
